The best national parks to visit in November are the ones in the desert Southwest and the South: Zion, Arches and Canyonlands, Grand Canyon's South Rim, Big Bend, White Sands and Joshua Tree. Add Great Smoky Mountains for the last fall color, Sequoia for the first snow on the giant trees, and Everglades as South Florida slides into its dry season. The high-elevation parks of the North and the Rockies are the opposite story: in Yellowstone, for example, most roads close to regular cars on November 1.
November is a true shoulder month. Summer heat has left the canyons, summer crowds have left the trailheads, and the holiday rush has not started yet. The trade-offs are real, though: short days, freezing nights at elevation, and seasonal closures that catch unprepared travelers every year. This guide covers where November works, what conditions to expect in each park, and what to check before you go.

Top National Parks for a November Trip
Zion National Park, Utah
Zion is at its calmest-but-still-colorful point in November. The National Park Service says fall color moves down from the high country and reaches Zion Canyon at the end of October and in early November, while visitation drops most sharply in November. Days are cool enough for full-day hikes, but the NPS warns that highs and lows can differ by 30°F in a single day, so start in layers.
Know before you go: the Zion Canyon shuttle still runs in November, just less often. An Angels Landing permit is still required. The Human History Museum closes after Thanksgiving. Zion is one of 11 parks that charge non-US residents an extra $100 per person (details in the planning section below). For month-by-month timing, see Best Time to Visit Zion National Park below.
Arches & Canyonlands National Parks, Utah
Arches is one of the most reliable November picks in the country. The park's own climate table puts the average November high at 56°F and the low at 30°F, and it records about 18 nights below freezing that month. In practice, that means cold mornings, comfortable afternoons, and hikes like Delicate Arch without summer's dangerous heat.
Know before you go: Arches dropped its timed-entry reservation system for 2026, so you only need a valid entrance pass. Arches is an International Dark Sky Park, and November's long nights make it a good time for stargazing. Canyonlands' Island in the Sky district is about 30 minutes away. Trails and dirt roads can become impassable after snow or ice, so check conditions the morning you go.
Grand Canyon National Park (South Rim), Arizona
The South Rim sits at about 7,000 feet, so November here is crisp: NOAA climate normals put the average November high near 53°F and the low near 25°F, with an average of about 2 inches of snow. What you get in return is clear air, easy lodging, and long views without summer crowds. The inside of the canyon is much warmer: the NPS says temperatures rise about 5.5°F for every 1,000 feet you descend, so a hike below the rim needs different clothing from the viewpoints.
Know before you go: plan November trips around the South Rim, which is open year-round. The North Rim reopened for the 2026 summer season after the 2025 Dragon Bravo Fire, but it is a summer-season destination and does not work for a November trip. The quietest window is usually the week before Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving weekend itself brings a sharp spike in visitors. Grand Canyon is on the $100 non-resident fee list.
Big Bend National Park, Texas
Big Bend is at its best from late fall through early spring, because its summers are brutal. At Panther Junction (3,740 ft), NOAA's 1991–2020 normals put the average November high near 69°F. The Chisos Mountains run 10–15°F cooler, and the low desert by the Rio Grande runs 5–10°F warmer. That spread lets you choose your climate within one park: cool mountain trails in the morning, and the river canyons and hot springs area in the afternoon.
Know before you go: the planned multi-year closure of the Chisos Basin did not happen. In April 2026 the NPS canceled the construction project, so the Basin, its campground and trails such as Lost Mine and the Window remain open. Big Bend is remote: fill your tank before you enter, and expect little or no cell service. Thanksgiving week is one of the park's busier periods, so book lodging early if your dates are fixed.
White Sands National Park, New Mexico
White Sands is a low-crowd November park that photographs beautifully in the low autumn sun. Average November highs are in the low 60s°F and lows in the upper 20s°F, so the gypsum dunes are comfortable to walk at midday and cold after sunset. Sledding on the dunes is allowed year-round in designated areas, and the sunset over white sand is the park's signature moment.
Know before you go: White Sands borders an active missile range. During military tests, the NPS may close Dunes Drive, the only road into the dunefield, for up to three hours, sometimes with only about 24 hours' notice. Check the park's closure schedule the day before your visit.
Joshua Tree National Park, California
Joshua Tree is one of the warmest options on this list: average November highs are around 69°F, with lows in the mid-40s°F. Fall is the start of the park's climbing and bouldering season, and the dry desert air makes for excellent stargazing. Late afternoon light on the boulder piles around Hidden Valley and Jumbo Rocks is the park's best photo window of the day.
Know before you go: desert nights feel colder than the numbers suggest, so pack a warm layer even if you are only staying for sunset. Campgrounds fill on fall weekends; visit midweek if you can. Joshua Tree does not charge the $100 non-resident fee.
Sequoia & Kings Canyon National Parks, California
November is when Sequoia often gets its first snow, and fresh snow on red sequoia bark is one of the most memorable sights in the park system. The Giant Forest and the General Sherman Tree stay reachable along the Generals Highway, and there are far fewer visitors than in summer.
Know before you go: the NPS notes that tire chains are often required in winter, so carry them. Highway 180 into Cedar Grove in Kings Canyon usually closes in mid-November. Sequoia & Kings Canyon charges the $100 non-resident fee. See Best Time to Visit Sequoia National Park for a full seasonal breakdown.

Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Tennessee & North Carolina
The Smokies are the best November choice if you want fall foliage. The NPS says the most brilliant displays at lower and mid elevations (below 4,000 feet) usually appear between mid-October and early November. The display features sugar maple, scarlet oak, sweetgum, red maple, yellow poplar and hickories. Low-elevation areas such as Cades Cove are among the last to color, so they are your best bet in early November. October is the park's busiest month, and November gives you much of the color with far less traffic.
Know before you go: the park has no entrance fee, but you need a parking tag to park anywhere in the park, year-round. At the high end of the park, around Kuwohi (formerly Clingmans Dome), November temperatures often stay between the upper 20s and low 40s°F, so dress for winter even if the valleys are mild.
Everglades National Park, Florida
Everglades is the warm-weather escape of the month, with one caveat worth knowing. The NPS defines the dry season as typically December through April and the wet season as May through November. November is therefore a transition month: rains taper off and humidity drops, but mosquitoes can linger early in the month. Late November is better, and it comes before the dry-season crowds.
Know before you go: most ranger-led programs at Shark Valley run in the dry season from mid-December. In November, the privately operated Shark Valley tram tours and bike rentals are the easiest way to see alligators and wading birds. Everglades is on the $100 non-resident fee list.
Best Time to Visit Popular National Parks
November is not the peak month for every famous park. Here is when each of these six parks is at its best, and what you should expect if you go in late fall.
Best Time to Visit Zion National Park
The best time to visit Zion National Park is mid-spring (April to May) or fall (October to mid-November). The NPS describes the seasons this way:
- Spring (March–April): a busy spring-break period, wildflowers, and the possibility of Narrows closures during high snowmelt.
- Summer (May–September): temperatures regularly above 100°F, around half a million visitors a month, and a monsoon flash-flood risk from July through September.
- Fall (October–November): the same scenery at a slower pace, with fall color reaching the canyon floor around the turn of the month.
- Winter (December–February): cold and often wet, with icy trails in shaded areas and the shuttle running only during the holidays.
Verdict: for hiking comfort and color, late October to mid-November is Zion's sweet spot. After Thanksgiving, the park moves into winter operations.
Best Time to Visit Acadia National Park
The best time to visit Acadia National Park is from late September to mid-October, when the foliage peaks and the coastal weather is still mild. Summer is the busiest period, and August is typically the single busiest month. Vehicle reservations to drive the Cadillac Summit Road are required only from May 20 to October 25, 2026.
Verdict on November: Acadia in November is bare-branched, cold and quiet, and it has one practical advantage: you can drive to the top of Cadillac Mountain without a reservation. That window is short. The Park Loop Road and Cadillac Summit Road usually close to vehicles from December 1 to April 14. Acadia charges the $100 non-resident fee.
Best Time to Visit Yellowstone National Park
The best time to visit Yellowstone National Park is June to early October if you want full road access. Of those months, September and the first days of October are the best combination of wildlife activity, thinner crowds and open roads. Winter from mid-December is a completely different park that you tour by snowcoach or snowmobile. For a winter trip, see our winter national parks guide.
Verdict on November: November is Yellowstone's quietest in-between month, and it is not a good time for a classic visit. On November 1, all interior roads close to regular vehicles except the Northern Range route between Mammoth and Silver Gate. That leaves Mammoth Hot Springs and the Lamar Valley for wildlife watching, but not Old Faithful or the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone. Snowcoaches begin running from West Yellowstone on December 15. If you are planning for next season, start with our Yellowstone lodging and 4-day itinerary.

Best Time to Visit Sequoia National Park
The best time to visit Sequoia National Park is from late spring to early fall. In that window, the whole road network is usually open, including seasonal routes to Cedar Grove, Mineral King and the Moro Rock area. The foothills are pleasant in spring and hot in summer. The sequoia groves at around 6,000–7,000 feet are comfortable all summer.
Verdict on November: November is snow season in the groves. You get the giants with few other visitors, but you should expect chains and some closures. Highway 180 from Grant Grove to Cedar Grove is open only from about the fourth Friday in April to mid-November. From the Friday after January 1 to the third Friday in March, the Generals Highway between Lodgepole and Grant Grove is not plowed and often closes. More California options are in our best national parks in California guide.
Best Time to Visit Olympic National Park
The best time to visit Olympic National Park is from July to September. This is the driest stretch of the year on the Olympic Peninsula, and all main roads, including the Hurricane Ridge Road, are usually open daily.
Verdict on November: November is the heart of the rainy season. That suits the Hoh Rain Forest, which is at its greenest and most atmospheric, and coastal storm-watching. Hurricane Ridge's winter season usually runs from late November to the end of March. During that season the road generally opens to uphill traffic only on Fridays through Sundays, weather permitting, and every vehicle must carry tire chains. Olympic does not charge the $100 non-resident fee.
Best Time to Visit Banff National Park (Canada)
Banff is in Canada, but it is on many US travelers' lists, so here is the short version. The best time to visit Banff National Park for its famous lakes is June to September. For skiing, the best time is December to April, and the Lake Louise ski area runs from November to May. Moraine Lake Road is closed to personal vehicles year-round, and Parks Canada shuttles and licensed operators serve it only from June to mid-October.
Verdict on November: November in Banff is shoulder season. The town is quiet and lodging is cheaper, but Moraine Lake is out of reach, the lakes are freezing over, and the ski season is only starting. If Canada's parks are on your list, see our Canada national parks map.
Planning a November National Park Trip
Weather by Region
November weather depends more on elevation than on latitude. In the desert Southwest, afternoons are mild, but nights often drop below freezing. The NPS notes that Arches can swing more than 40 degrees in a single day. The Sierra Nevada and the Rockies get their first lasting snow. In the Southeast, the last fall color hangs on at low elevations. South Florida is warm and moves from its wet season to its dry season.
Crowds and Thanksgiving
In most parks, visitation drops sharply after October, and the NPS says that at Zion the decline is most dramatic in November. The exception is Thanksgiving, which falls on November 26 in 2026. That week brings a short, sharp crowd surge to popular parks such as Zion and the Grand Canyon. If your dates are flexible, the week before Thanksgiving is usually the quietest part of the month.
Seasonal Closures to Check
November is when parks switch to winter operations, often in stages. In this guide alone, that includes Yellowstone's interior roads on November 1, Highway 180 into Cedar Grove in mid-November, Zion's Human History Museum after Thanksgiving, and Acadia's Park Loop Road on December 1. Check the park's Alerts page on nps.gov the week before your trip and again the morning you drive in.
Fees, Passes and the Veterans Day Fee-Free Day
Veterans Day, November 11, is one of the 2026 fee-free days at parks that charge an entrance fee. Since 2026, fee-free days apply only to US residents. Non-US residents aged 16 and older also pay a $100 per-person fee on top of the standard entrance fee at 11 parks: Acadia, Bryce Canyon, Everglades, Glacier, Grand Canyon, Grand Teton, Rocky Mountain, Sequoia & Kings Canyon, Yellowstone, Yosemite and Zion. If you plan to visit several of these parks, a non-resident annual pass ($250) usually costs less than paying the fee at each park.
Daylight and What to Pack
In the Southwest, November days offer roughly 10 hours of light. Start long hikes early and carry a headlamp. A basic November kit includes:
- Layers for 30°F swings: a warm midlayer, a windproof shell, a hat and gloves.
- Microspikes or other traction for shaded trails in Zion, the Grand Canyon and the Smokies.
- Tire chains for Sequoia and any mountain road.
- Offline maps, because most parks have patchy or no cell service.
Mark Your November Parks on the Map
November trips are often the ones people remember best: an empty trail, first snow on a sequoia, the last red maples in Cades Cove. When you get home, mark the parks you visited on a wooden national parks map or our National Parks Travel Tracker and watch your list grow. November is also the start of gift season, and a park map makes a thoughtful gift for the traveler in your life. For more ideas, see our gifts for travelers guide.
